Reading Speed Calculator is a free tool built for readers who want accurate time estimates — not population averages. Most reading time calculators use a single figure (often 200–300 wpm) regardless of what you are reading. This produces wildly inaccurate results.

A legal contract, a fantasy novel, and a chemistry research paper all require different reading speeds, and your personal speed within each genre matters just as much. Our tool solves both problems: we test your speed using a standardised passage from your chosen content type, then use your measured speed for all future calculations.

We cover 16 content categories — from web fiction to STEM research papers — with passages at three length tiers so you can choose a quick 1-minute sample or a more stable 4-minute test.
